What are Scrollbooks? How Do They Relate to Journaling?
Scrollbooks do not have to take the place of junk journals and scrapbooks—they can add a soulful dimension! There is no right or wrong way to add this dimension—it’s as individual as the individual.
And Scrollbooks can stand on their own, incorporating elements used in junk journals, scrapbooks, card-making, hand-stitched relics, and whatever else your imagination brings into the process. Read “Welcome to Scrollbooks” for more details and inspiration.
The important thing is that they do integrate scrolls somewhere—and that they are YOU: your journey, your experiences, your celebrations, your trials, your tribulations, your calm midst the storm, your insights, your ripples, and anything you would like to record.
Scrolls are transmissions. I have written and produced hundreds of scrolls you can use or adapt, or you can develop your own scrolls. A few of my scrolls are located here, for reference: Scroll Reading Room. I have many more which will be posted in multiple places as they are relevant.
You Get to Define Your Scrollbook
You get to define what your scrollbook is and how you integrate the ideas that I present in my scrolls and in these articles that are dedicated to Scrollbooks and Junk Journals.
I will be presenting a new article every week. There will be a specific focus for a series of articles. The topic will run for a few weeks and then switch to a different theme, although the Desert Walk is an overarching theme.
The Desert Walk
Our first topic is The Desert Walk. I will provide patterns, instructions, and guidance related to the spiritual or mythic walk in the desert, corresponding to Exodus in the Bible.
This story will be explored in a new way, and we will create beautiful narratives of our own walks. We will learn how to “ripple,” which is a term designating reaching out our hands to other people who are walking the desert, in particular those who need encouragement and assistance. We will document our experiences and the consequences we witness when we give others a glimmer of hope during trying times.
The first Desert Walk article will be posted the week of March 23, 2026.

Journaling Cards
Next time: We will be making journaling cards for our scrollbooks and journals. There will be free printable ephemera and creative ideas for making journal cards that can go into pockets or be slipped between the pages of your journal.
In the meantime, here are some scrolls I have put together about Scrollbooks. You can print these for reference and even include them in the scrollbook you will be building as you work through my articles. I like using a binder and placing the full-sized scrolls in plastic sleeves, but you can use any method you would like.
